Fascinating! Not being a member of the WHO is apparently the biggest status symbol there is. If I were filthy rich, I'd move there in a heartbeat.

Well maybe it has nothing to do with affordability so much as corruption! Perhaps all the countries signed up to the WHO are just plain corrupt!

Besides being expensive for a small population, I found this:

" In 1919 Switzerland assumed the role of safeguarding Liechtenstein's interests and its citizens abroad at the request of the Liechtenstein government. In all countries in which Liechtenstein has no consular representation, Liechtenstein citizens can contact the Swiss representative office with regard to consular matters. " Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, "Principality of Liechtenstein"

"The Customs Treaty with Switzerland of 29 March 1923 laid the cornerstone for a new era in the economic development of Liechtenstein, which owes a significant share of its success to the ever closer cooperation with Switzerland.

The provisions of the Customs Treaty stipulate that all Swiss laws pertaining to customs are also applicable to Liechtenstein, as well as other Federal legislation necessary for the implementation of the customs union. Provisions of Swiss Federal law which establish Federal contribution requirements are exempt from this rule. In addition, all trade and customs treaties concluded by Switzerland with third States also apply to Liechtenstein on the basis of the Customs Treaty. Switzerland is authorized to simultaneously represent Liechtenstein in such negotiations and to conclude these treaties with effect in Liechtenstein."

So, Switserland will take care of the interest of Liechtenstein at the WHO.

I tend to think all the countries think it's about "status" - like when you're in school and you think it's prestigious to be in the "popular crowd." I would also love to know more about the country Liechtenstein - it's fascinating why they're not in WHO and are they really a rich country? Hmmmm
